Kelowna’s landscapes invite year-round exploration, from lakeside paths and cycling routes to forested trails and alpine terrain. A little preparation goes a long way when spending time outdoors in Kelowna and the surrounding area.

Before You Go Outdoors

Be Prepared: AdventureSmart’s Three Ts

No matter the activity or length of your outing, practicing the Three Ts helps keep outdoor experiences safe and enjoyable.

Trip planning

Anytime you’re heading outdoors, be sure to:

  • Check the weather
  • Plan your route
  • Understand terrain and conditions
  • Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return
Training

Choose activities that align with your skills and experience, and research what’s required before you go.

Taking the essentials

Depending on your plans, consider bringing:

  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Sun protection and appropriate clothing
  • Bug protection
  • Flashlight
  • Fire-making kit
  • Cell phone

Learn more about the Three Ts on the AdventureSmart website.

Respect the Land

Following the Camper's Code helps protect Kelowna’s landscapes and everyone who enjoys them. Respect wildlife, stay on designated trails, control pets, practice fire safety, store food securely, follow posted signs, and pack out what you bring in.

Wildfire Prevention & Safety

Hot, dry summers increase wildfire risk in the region, and many fires in British Columbia are human-caused. When outdoors:

  • Never discard lit cigarettes or burning materials
  • Check for fire restrictions before lighting any fire
  • Never leave campfires unattended, and fully extinguish them
  • Build fires well away from trees and logs
  • Avoid activities that could create sparks
  • Personal fireworks are illegal in Kelowna

To report a wildfire or unsafe behaviour, call 1 800 663-5555 or *5555 from a mobile phone.

Hot Weather Safety

During periods of hot weather:

  • Seek shade and avoid direct sun during peak hours
  • Wear protective clothing, hats and sunscreen
  • Drink water regularly
  • Take breaks and slow down activities
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles

Visit the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre website for the latest updates on heat warnings and related resources, such as the opening of public cooling centres.

Wildlife Safety

Wildlife encounters are rare, but awareness is key:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
  • Travel in groups and make noise in bear country
  • Carry bear spray where appropriate
  • Keep pets leashed
  • Never feed or approach wildlife
