A visit to Kelowna means experiencing the full rhythm of all four seasons, and in March, winter begins to loosen its grip as spring quietly comes alive. Snow still lingers on the mountain peaks while the valley floor brightens with longer days, budding orchards, and lakeside strolls that feel a little warmer each afternoon. It’s a season of fresh possibility, where you can savour crisp mountain air in the morning and sunshine on a patio by late day, catching Kelowna in that energizing moment of renewal.

Outdoor Adventure

Winter story idea - fat biking
Fat biking at Myra Canyon Trestles

Adventure pulses through Kelowna year-round, but March is when the playground truly opens up. Snow softens in the city while the surrounding mountains still sparkle, creating the rare chance to carve fresh tracks in the morning and stroll sunlit waterfront paths by afternoon. It’s a season where winter and spring share the stage, inviting you to ski, hike, ride, or simply roam, all in one energizing day.

Get your fill of Okanagan champagne powder by heading up to Big White Ski Resort. With added activities like fat biking, skating, tubing, snowmobiling, and more, you’re sure to find something for any outdoor lover (or après-ski opportunities for those who prefer to stay indoors). If you’re a skier comfortable on green and blue runs, take advantage of Big White’s free Snow Host tours. These 90-minute tours, which take place daily at 10:30 a.m., are open to skiers of all ages—an experienced local volunteer will show you the ins and outs of the resort, making sure you have fun and make the most of your visit. Discover more about the program and other available activities on Big White’s website.

Feel like skiing and golfing on the same day? In most years, you can do that in March! Two Eagles Golf Course in West Kelowna is traditionally one of the first to open in early March, with other courses following suit mid-month. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just getting started with the sport, you’ll find a Kelowna golf course that matches your skill level.

While rentals for water sports aren’t available yet this early in the year, those with their own equipment and the right gear to stay warm can get out to explore the Kelowna paddle trail on Okanagan Lake—many locals are out on the water year-round!

Transitioning Weather

Waterfront Park-March
Waterfront Park, Downtown Kelowna

March is a season of shift, so packing layers is key. Daytime temperatures typically range from -2°C to 10°C, which can feel brisk or beautifully mild depending on what you’re used to. You may catch a light sprinkle or a brief flurry, but precipitation is usually gentle and short-lived, more refreshing than disruptive. If your plans take you into the mountains, winter still holds strong at higher elevations, so proper cold-weather gear is essential. A little preparation means you’ll be ready to move comfortably with the shifting conditions.
