This upcoming weekend, our Community & Visitor Engagement team will be hosting daily pop-ups at the Kelowna Visitor Centre, allowing residents and visitors to connect with local artisans, find unique local goods, and support the community.
Aboriginal Creeations
Friday, June 14 | 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Artist and beader Nancy A. Luis of Aboriginal Creeations will be at the KVC on Friday, June 14, to showcase her work. She is inspired by the love and respect she feels for Mother Earth, and her artwork brings a unique twist to the traditional Dream Catcher, which she calls Spirit Catchers. Nancy's creations reflect the animals’ point of view of living through climate change, and each piece has a deep meaning behind it that tells a story.
Indigenous Artists, Greta Reid and Justine Allison
Saturday, June 15 | 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Indigenous artists Greta Reid and Justine Allison will showcase their beadwork, including earrings, hair pieces, and more, at the KVC on Saturday, June 15.
Greta Reid (pictured above) is Suqnaquinx – syilx/Okanagan Nation. Their spiritual leaders were Inuit, Oji-Cree, and Pascua Yaqui Tribe, and because of this, they consider their teachings to be “tangled in many Nations.” Justine Allison (pictured below) is of Kainai First Nations, currently living on unceded syilx territory. She is a self-taught beadwork artist that honors her Blackfoot heritage through making this medicine for herself to share with others.
If you cannot visit us on Saturday or are interested in learning more from these two, keep your eyes peeled for future dates of the Indigenous Beading Circle they lead at the Kelowna Art Gallery, which welcomes both Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous creatives of all skill levels.
