We are excited to announce that Katie Balkwill will join Tourism Kelowna in early June as our new Director of Community & Visitor Engagement.

Katie Balkwill Welcome

Katie brings over 16 years of experience in community engagement, visitor experience, and destination growth. Her leadership style is results-oriented and collaborative, and she has a proven track record of building community partnerships and mobilizing high-performing teams. Some highlights of her background include:

  • Strategic Tourism Leadership: Katie served as a Board Director for Tourism Kelowna for six years, contributing to governance, finance, and stakeholder collaboration during pivotal growth periods like the successful launch of the Kelowna Visitor Centre.
  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement: As Sales and Marketing Manager for Big White Ski Resort, Katie led initiatives to elevate visitor experiences and foster partnerships with tourism operators, government agencies, and community leaders. She managed large-scale events and training programs, strengthening industry and community relations.
  • Business & Operational Growth: Most recently, as Chief Revenue Officer at Two Small Men with Big Hearts Moving Canada, Katie developed and executed strategic plans that drove revenue growth, enhanced customer engagement, and improved operational efficiency through technology integration.

Katie has also received industry awards for her exceptional commitment to building long-term relationships and service excellence. She has completed diversity and inclusivity training, and is passionate about creating welcoming, inclusive environments for visitors, residents, and staff.

As department director, Katie will oversee two direct reports: the Community & Visitor Engagement Manager and the (soon-to-be recruited) Destination Development Project Coordinator. She will be responsible for their success while ensuring the larger team achieves its departmental goals and objectives.  As a member of the senior leadership team, Katie reports directly to the President & CEO and also has organization-wide leadership responsibilities.

Katie’s combination of strategic vision, stakeholder engagement, and dedication to community impact will be invaluable as we continue to grow and strengthen our connections with both visitors and our local community.

We look forward to welcoming Katie on June 10 and invite you to connect with her in-person at the Kelowna Visitor Centre or at katie.balkwill@tourismkelowna.com.
