As of November 1, 2023, employers in BC have new requirements to follow in accordance with the province's new Pay Transparency Act, which seeks to address systemic discrimination in the workplace.

Moving forward, all employers must:

  • Include the expected pay or pay range of a position when advertising the job opportunity publicly.
  • No longer ask job applicants about salary or pay rates in previous positions when conducting interviews.
  • No longer penalize employees in any way for discussing their pay within or beyond the work environment.

Every November 1, medium- and large-sized employers will also be required to post annual pay transparency reports. The introduction of this requirement will be completed in stages over four years; the BC Government and the six largest Crown corporations were the first to be required to post these reports on November 1, 2023.
