It’s no surprise that Kelowna is the beating heart of Okanagan arts and culture. The vibrant lakeshore and incredible nature help fuel an arts scene that features numerous museums, galleries, and theatres all across the city. Whether you’re looking to catch a show, take in the cultural legacy of the valley, or absorb some of the breathtaking pictures and paintings inspired by the beautiful land and people of the Okanagan, Kelowna’s got you covered.

But for those on the lookout for some more hands-on opportunities to immerse yourself in a creative environment, Kelowna is also a city of community and grassroots art. There are dozens of different opportunities around town for you to try your hand at a creative endeavour, be they self-guided adventures in poetry, structured instruction in the culinary arts, or anything between and beyond. Let’s explore a few of the options, shall we?

Unexpected Art Spaces

To begin, you’d be surprised by what you can find just by experiencing the city and being a part of Kelowna’s community. Sip and paint nights, where you can have a drink and paint some pictures are popular events among local breweries and wineries such as Gray Monk Estate Winery. And if you’re feeling brave enough, there’s no shortage of open mic nights across town as well—I’d recommend checking out the Inspired Word Café and their spoken word nights, primarily hosted at BNA Brewing. You can follow the Inspired Word Café on Instagram or visit their website to stay up-to-date on upcoming events.

Events like these hosted in local places offer an engaging and supportive space to hone your craft and share your work, as well as share it with others if you’re so inclined—though I'd understand why you wouldn't be!

Markets, Crafts, and Studios

Kelowna is also known across the province for its wide array of markets, fairs, and craft emporiums. Be it sunshine and fresh air at farmers' markets, or a cool breeze winding through Christmas craft fairs, there are lots of opportunities to meet creators and peruse their creations year-round. Many of these markets are a great place to get started on projects of your own, and are a mainstay in sourcing materials and making connections for any artist.

If you’re looking for something more specifically tailored towards the art of making art, however, there are also a variety of specialty spaces available around town. Workshops, studios, recording booths, and more are all accessible as needed if you know where to find them. One of the best places to check out would be the AesthetiKs LAB downtown. With either a drop-in session or a monthly membership, you get full access to a wide variety of high-quality tools to help bring your ideas out into the world.

Immersive Experiences

If you want to really get immersed in the arts scene here in Kelowna, there are plenty of venues that showcase engaging and experimental art projects that invite the viewer to interact with them hands-on. One such venue is the Rotary Centre for the Arts, a frequent cultural touchstone of the Central Okanagan. While known for its fantastic concerts and film showcases, the Rotary Centre also showcases experimental and immersive experiences that let you get up close and personal with the pieces. One of the best places to experience this unique community artistry is at the nearby Common and Artwalk. The Artwalk often features experimental art pieces by local artists and students given space to innovate, and is a brief but meaningful experience that shouldn’t be missed!

Workshops and DIY

Of course, sometimes the simplest way to enjoy a hands-on experience with the arts is to sign up for one. There are countless workshops and DIY opportunities to discover here in Kelowna, in a wide variety of disciplines. Try checking out one of the many on-campus learning and community opportunities available on the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s Events Page, or take a gander at the selection of workshops offered at the Lakehouse Kitchens Cooking School to help spark your palate. And of course, there’s always the ever-dependable Okanagan Regional Library, whose offerings include a wide host of classes, workshops, and immersive experiences. Any of these is a fantastic way to make your mark with art in a supportive and personal environment filled with others at your skill level looking to learn alongside you. It’s a great way to make friends too!
