Gyro-Boyce Beach Park, Kelowna
A popular spot among locals and tourists alike is Gyro-Boyce Beach. The massive shoreline means you can pull up a blanket or a chair and relax while you watch the town wind down around you. For a little extra magic, try taking out a paddleboard or kayak. You could even try packing your bathing suit. A late swim during golden hour could be just what the doctor ordered.
Since Gyro Beach is so central, there are tons of restaurants to hit up afterwards. Shore Line Brewing is right across the street, and in the summer months, you could even sit on their patio and have dinner with a view.
Spion Kop, Lake Country
Known as one of Lake Country’s most popular hikes, the Spion Kop summit view is worth tying up your laces for. Located just 30 minutes from Downtown Kelowna, this west-facing hike means you’ll be able to sit and watch the sun sink down behind the mountains from high up.
The shortest route to the top is via the Arrowleaf Trail starting from the Upper Lakes Trailhead. This will take you to the Grand Overlook, and trust us when we say it is just as grand as it sounds. Once you’re up there, you will have panoramic golden views of the valley, Okanagan Lake, Wood Lake, and Kalamalka Lake.
It’s about 2.5 km one way, so be mindful that you will likely be heading down in darker conditions. It’s also not a bad idea to scout out the trail route ahead of time so you know what you’re getting into. Proper gear, including flashlights and quality shoes, is definitely recommended.
Coral Beach Park, Lake Country
Happen to be in the Lake Country area but want to take things a bit easier? No problem! Coral Beach Park is just that vibe. Open until 11 p.m. daily, this pebble beach viewpoint is the perfect place to take in the spectacular views.
Equipped with a boat launch, swimming raft, pickleball and tennis courts, as well as a charming little picnic area, it makes for the perfect spot to end the day.
Once you’re done filling your camera roll with gold, try hitting up Ex Nihilo Vineyards in the area. Open seven days a week, this adorable vineyard is a short 15-minute drive from the beach. What better way to end the day than with local eats and a glass of wine?
Knox Mountain Park: Paul's Tomb & Apex Trail, Kelowna
A Kelowna classic! Knox Mountain Park offers the perfect mix of city and nature, with some of the best sunset views just minutes from downtown. Whether you're looking for a relaxed lakeside stroll or a hike with a little more elevation, there are a couple of great ways to enjoy golden hour here.
For something more laid-back, follow Paul's Tomb Trail along the mountainside to a secluded lakeside cove. Pack a picnic or grab some takeout from Jackknife Brewing or BNA Brewing before heading out. Dinner with a view? Yes, please!
If you're up for a bit more of a climb, take the Apex Trail towards the first or second lookout for panoramic views of downtown Kelowna, Okanagan Lake, and the surrounding mountains. It's especially beautiful as the sun begins to dip behind the hills across the lake.
Whichever route you choose, bring a flashlight for the return trip and give yourself plenty of time to soak it all in.
Dilworth Mountain Park
Dilworth Mountain Park has become a staple for many local families. Towering over 1,000 feet above the valley, this vantage point will make sure you get an unobstructed view during golden hour. Plus, your fur baby can come with you! Dogs are allowed on the trail, but make sure to keep them on leash.
The 2.7 km loop is considered to be easily approachable for most activity levels. Taking a half hour to complete and with many benches to take in the views, it makes it the perfect nature trail if you’re in a time crunch or require a spot that's a little more accessible.
sntsk’il’ntən (Black Mountain) Regional Park, Kelowna
For big valley views and some of the best fiery sunset skies, sntsk’il’ntən (Black Mountain) Regional Park deserves a spot on your list. Located in Kelowna's Black Mountain neighbourhood, this park offers a different perspective of the Okanagan Valley, with rolling grasslands, rocky hillsides, and wide-open landscapes.
Take a walk along the trails and find a viewpoint where you can watch the evening light stretch across the valley. On the right night, the sky lights up in shades of orange, pink, and purple, making it a pretty spectacular place to end the day.
With exposed trails and limited shade, it's a good idea to bring water, comfortable hiking shoes, and an extra layer for when the sun goes down.
Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park, Kelowna
If you're looking for a quieter spot to catch the sunset, Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park might just become your new favourite. Tucked away in Kelowna's Upper Mission, this peaceful park offers wide-open grasslands, rugged cliffs, and some seriously unreal views of Okanagan Lake.
Follow the trails towards the Crags, where you'll be treated to sweeping views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It's the kind of place where you'll want to find a comfortable spot, take a seat, and watch the sky slowly change colours.
The trails vary in difficulty, with some rocky and uneven sections, so be sure to wear proper footwear and bring a flashlight for the walk back. Trust us, the sunset views are well worth the effort!

When to Go: Sunset Times Through the Year in Kelowna

Photo: @adeorksen
The most vivid sunset viewing is typically from mid-June through mid-September. This time of year brings with it clearer skies and high temperatures, which is the perfect recipe to see some mind-blowing sunsets. It’s during this time of year that sunsets are often later, ranging from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., depending on the month.
Winter months call for earlier sunset views, and at times, lingering valley cloud can obstruct views. This is when it’s nice to head up somewhere with higher elevation. With days drawing to a close faster during these months, the sunsets will often begin around 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., so planning is essential.
Before You Head Out: Dusk Hiking Tips
We always suggest hiking with a buddy or, at the very least, sharing your location with a friend. Proper shoes and flashlights are encouraged, as heading back to your car or down the mountain after sunset will mean darker conditions.
Always know before you go and check the weather, no matter the season you’re exploring in. Wildlife is also always a possibility, as the local fauna are more active during dawn and dusk, so be mindful of your surroundings and consider carrying bear spray during the summer months.
Build a Golden Hour Into Your Okanagan Trip
Catching the remarkable Kelowna sunsets should be a staple during your next visit. It’s totally free and, depending on where you go, can be a nice, quiet way to end the day. Plus, you can always create your own unique experience and pick up some takeout on the way to a special viewpoint.
If you want to hit up one of the many rooftop patios or wineries for dinner and a view, we suggest making a reservation. That way, you can sit back and relax and have the hardest decision of the day be choosing what to order.
So get your cameras ready! It’s time to get out there and take in the best sunset spots Kelowna has to offer.
