Attending the Sport Events Congress can lead to opportunities to host major events such as The Brier.

National Sport Organizations (NSOs), event rights holders, and sport industry educators made up the very informative and successful 2017 Sport Events Congress held from March 18-22, 2017 in Ottawa. Groups such as Hockey Canada, Skate Canada, and Curling Canada were on hand to meet destination representatives from across Canada at the annual conference.

With an emphasis on education and networking, Tourism Kelowna’s Harvey Hubball had exclusive access to several NSOs to discuss opportunities to host their major events. Aside from these sales meetings, he was also able to collaborate and share industry best practices with the other attending Canadian destinations. One of the highlights each year during the Congress, the Sport Events Exchange, gave Tourism Kelowna formal meetings with 10 NSOs to discuss future hosting opportunities of their major events.

Attending the Sport Events Congress is vital to continue to grow Kelowna as a premier sport hosting destination. Face-to-face meetings with these NSOs that are usually headquartered in Eastern Canada, strengthens their relationship with Tourism Kelowna and puts Kelowna in a better position of strength when bidding on major events. Notable meetings during the conference included Skate Canada, Curling Canada, CARHA, and Canada Corporate Games.
