World Tourism Day takes place this Friday, September 27, with tourism management organizations celebrating around the world, including at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) signature event in New Delhi, India.
This year’s theme, ‘Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All,” highlights tourism’s important role in job creation and economic development. According to UNWTO, tourism accounts for one in ten jobs worldwide. Here in British Columbia, approximately 1 in 16 jobs is generated by tourism, while locally, our tourism industry is the third-largest employer, providing close to 12,000 jobs in Kelowna and the Central Okanagan.
“Our mission is to market our destination in a sustainable manner that strengthens the economy while enriching the quality of life for residents,” says Lisanne Ballantyne, President & CEO of Tourism Kelowna. “World Tourism Day is an opportunity to celebrate the long-term, local benefits of a strong visitor economy.”
Globally, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals also highlight the need to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
In celebration of World Tourism Day, Tourism Kelowna will be offering a one-day, 15% discount on the popular Love For Kelowna and Kelowna Vibes merchandise. The discount will apply to all in-store purchases made at the Kelowna Visitor Centre on Friday, September 27.
