One of Them Will Be Unlucky is an upcoming exhibition by Korean-Canadian artist Sora Park. Opening November 20 in the main gallery space of the Alternator, Park explores family history and language to depict the complexities of diaspora.

There was a rumour circulating among the Germans as such: “There are 13 Korean students in Potsdam right now. In Germany, 13 is an unlucky number. So, one of them will be unlucky.”

Upon researching her great-grandfather, she found an article mentioning his time in Germany leading up to his death. The unlucky Korean student that the Germans were foreseeing was her great-grandfather.

Through an exploration of her great-grandfather’s belongings, Park reveals a web of facts, memory and superstition, complicated by translation across various languages, including Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and German.

One of Them Will Be Unlucky will be on view from November 20, 2020, to January 9, 2021 (with the exception of holiday closure, December 24 to January 4).
