Here’s a short list of some of the things invented in England in the 1600’s: insurance, the stock market, the steel-nib pen, the science of physics, the modern form of the English language. To celebrate this inventive and exploratory era, Early Music Studio has invited guest artists, actors Anna Hagan and Terence Kelly to perform in a concert of ballads, poetry, and music from the British Isles. This was the age of great poets, as they created the world’s first global language.

But it wasn’t just an age of great writers—musicians and composers began to put words and music together—in effect they re-invented music by creating the pop song. Words and music together became a marketable item, as composers and poets like Henry Purcell and John Dryden became popular sensations.

Part of the Early Music Studio’s innovative style is to present poetry and music together using a technique called underscoring: Music that reflects the literary mood used to bring out the meaning of the words. In effect, the listener hears the language itself as if it were music, and the music is heard as a language. It’s a compelling combination, and these performers have perfected this fine art through decades of collaboration.

Guest artists Terry Kelly and Anna Hagan won a Lifetime Achievement award at the Vancouver theatre community’s Jessie Awards for their tireless devotion to the arts, and for their many years of contribution to the theatre community as performers, directors, mentors, and organizers.

Terence Kelly has been performing in television, film, and on stage his entire life. A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, he was the Founding Director of the Arena Theatre in White Rock. He was a key participant in helping to establish and build the Performing Arts Lodge in Vancouver, a residence for artists who have worked in the performing arts in BC. He recently appeared with Anna Hagan in the Western Gold production of Twelfth Night and will can be seen starring in holiday movies such as: The Christmas Train, When Calls The Heart Christmas Special, and Windows Wonderland on the Hallmark Network.

Anna’s career has seen her perform at the Shaw Festival, Stratford Festival, Soul Pepper Theatre and the World Stage Festival, as well as most theatres across Canada. Well known in the Vancouver theatre community, she is now Artistic Director of Western Gold Theatre – a senior professional company committed to producing quality theatre to audiences of all ages. Her recent work includes Three Tall Women, The Dining Room, Homeward Bound, and the world premiere of Red Birds, a commissioned play. She is active on the screen: Credits include movies Judicial Indiscretion, The Step Father, The Possession, Double Jeopardy, Reindeer Games and TV series Da Vinci’s Inquest, The Dead Zone, Cold Squad.
