Pump up the beach balls - the unofficial start to summer is almost here. If you’re coming to Kelowna on May Long Weekend, get ready for some fun in the sun! Now that the Okanagan’s outdoor season has begun, you’re bound to enjoy a getaway that will be the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Don’t forget to pack your shorts, swimsuits, sunscreen and sunglasses as average daytime high temperatures are in the low 20’s at this time of year.

Take In the Views

Bike or hike - there is a scenic trail for every adventurer in the Kelowna area. Our favourite picturesque trek on foot or with pedals at this time of year is along the Kettle Valley Railway to check out on the Myra Canyon. Give yourself at least several hours if you want to experience all of the 18 trestles and 2 tunnels. The drive to the trail takes about a half hour to 45 minutes from central Kelowna, but the views are well worth the time. Even the drive to the trailhead is beautiful as you pass by the blooming orchards and budding vineyards of East Kelowna. Note that you do have to travel on a gravel road for a part of the way to the trestles, but the road does accommodate most vehicles. Upon arrival, there is plenty of parking at the entrance.

If you left your bike at home, no sweat! You can rent one onsite from Myra Canyon Bicycle Rentals and Tours. They have bicycles for adults and children, as well as tandem bikes and child trailers. You can also book a tour with one of their guides who can take you on a Historical Tour (or even a Bike and Wine Tour!).

Dance On the Street

The May Long Weekend coincides with the start of a season-long street party as Meet Me On Bernard will be back for this year. From Friday, May 17 until Monday, September 2, the western end of Bernard Avenue in downtown Kelowna will be closed to all vehicle traffic. (Bikes and scooters will be permitted). Get social and ask the restaurant hostess for a table outside! Patios along this area will extend into a portion of the street, and there will be added outdoor games and entertainment right through the summer.

If you happen to be in the area on Sunday, you can also peruse the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market's satellite market at Kerry Park on the corner of Bernard Avenue and Abbott Street.

Find That Birdie

May is one of the best months to hit the golf course as it’s not often too hot nor cold. If you opt for an early morning tee-time, it can be a bit crisp, but by mid-morning, your whole foursome will be in t-shirts. From world-class championship courses with challenging greens, to even fairways for the beginner golfer, Kelowna has a tee box for all levels. I recommend Tower Ranch Golf Course if you’re a serious player as this course will always test your skills, and the views are spectacular from almost every hole. For the more novice player, Two Eagles Golf Course in West Kelowna is a shorter course and has some forgiving sections with gorgeous lake views.

There are also several driving ranges to choose from in the Kelowna area. The Golf Centre Practice Facility on Benvoulin Road is now open with extended hours from 9am until 7pm. No clubs? No problem! They offer a complimentary assortment of adult and junior clubs in their Pro Shop, however, a donation to support the Boys and Girls Club is welcome.

Go For a Swim

The lake will still be on the cool side, but taking dip in May is refreshing! Bring your floatie and head to the beach at City Park. Or take your lakeside vacation to the next level and rent a watercraft at Downtown Marina. They have almost anything that floats in their fleet - from boats to jet-skis to kayaks to paddlebaords - giving you the option to explore Okanagan Lake any way you want!
