Okanagan International Festival of Animation, 2017
The Okanagan International Festival of Animation, 2017 is an annual six-day event, market and conference that is being planned to launch in early October 2017 in Kelowna, British Columbia. The festival’s purpose is to celebrate the many forms of animation produced on (but not limited to) the West Coast of North America. Each year, a new artistic director will be appointed to provide their vision, leadership and perspective on animation and the avenues they choose to explore and showcase. The festival’s aim is to be the event of the year for animation professionals and fans from around the world, and to provide a forum for both the “new” and the “now” to be showcased.
The format of the festival will revolve around a competition of feature and short films, commercial and student films, and installations. It is expected that screenings will include independent and larger budget productions and blockbusters, commissioned or non-commissioned films and student work. The screenings will be interwoven with events.
A two-day industry conference “marketplace” will take place on the Monday and Tuesday. An opening gala will be held on the Monday night to launch the Okanagan International Festival of Animation. A special walk-about outdoor installation night, held in the cultural district of Kelowna, will be held on the Wednesday. Here, participants will take in various exhibits, as well as enjoy some of the city’s amazing eateries, pubs and nightlife.
The festival will conclude on Friday night with an awards ceremony and closing festivities. A career day is also planned as an integral part of the festival. On the Saturday, studios will be actively recruiting and panels are being planned. They will cover how to get animation work, the current state of animation, and additional relevant topics.
For the inaugural 2017 festival, high profile animation professional Danny Antonucci has agreed to act as Artistic Director. His remarkable body of work has inspired countless artists and amazed millions of fans. From his infamous Lupo the Butcher film (an homage to his beloved uncle) to his work on MTV’s The Brothers Grunt and the highly successful Ed, Edd n Eddy – the 10-year series that shattered every record that international broadcaster Cartoon Network had achieved up to that point – Mr. Antonucci has earned a reputation as one of the most talented visionaries in animation. While Mr. Antonucci has garnered a range of international accolades and acknowledgement for his talents, his focus has always been on the work rather than the celebrity of it all. He is the consummate artist, letting his creativity lead the way in a no-holds-barred M.O., and he will not be manipulated to produce against his vision. Needless to say, with Mr. Antonucci as the Artistic Director, the bar for the Okanagan International Festival of Animation is set high.
